The 2021-22 cycle saw neo-Marxist leaders swept into power in a Latin American “pink tide” unseen since the São Paulo Forum’s launch in the 1990s, with Colombia’s Petro, Chile’s Boric and Brazil’s Lula facing reelection in 2025-26. These autocrats keep pressing for top-down cultural revolution, but reactions like Argentina’s are afoot elsewhere, too. While the world awaits to see the USA re-enter the global struggle against woke progressivism, Hungary’s own governance model could also inspire the region’s quest to re-anchor itself in its traditional faith and family values, as championed by the Madrid office of the Center for Fundamental Rights launched in March.

What is at stake in the region’s culture war? Could its experience with neo-Marxism prove a harbinger of similar struggles beyond?
